Trotter Back With the Eagles

September 29th, 2009 | by joeb03 |

After two workouts for Andy Reid and the Eagles coaching staff, Jeremiah Trotter has been signed to a one-year contract worth the league minimum. The former fan favorite at middle linebacker is now starting his third stint with the team, last playing for the Eagles in the 2006 season. To make room for Trotter on the 53-man roster, Jeff Garcia has been released.

Trotter was a force in the middle with the Eagles for years. His run blocking ability earned him four Pro-Bowl berths in his years in Philadelphia. Reid apparently thinks he is physically ready to rejoin the NFL and be a productive part of his defense.

“Jeremiah Trotter has always been one of my favorite players,” said head coach Andy Reid. “He has worked very hard to keep himself in shape and we are pleased with where he is physically. We are excited to give him an opportunity to contribute to our football team.”

The guy played with ferocious intensity throughout his career, so he is certainly at the very least an asset in the locker room. Trotter has been out of the game for a bit but has kept himself in shape. It is possible that the prolonged rest gave his knees a chance to recover.

“I’m happy to be back in green,” Trotter said. “I was raised in those colors, in that system. I’m part of this city.”

Trotter will likely get some playing time spelling Omar Gaither on first and second downs, especially against the bigger running backs like Brandon Jacobs. Gaither has been playing well, but is a bit small for a MIKE ‘backer. Now with Trotter available to help on running downs, Gaither will stay fresh and be even better in passing situations.

I like the move. Garcia became expendable with McNabb’s health status, so the signing is low-risk, high-reward. Reid believes that Trotter still has some life left in his legs, so I trust his judgement. With tough running backs on the horizon (Jacobs, Clinton Portis, LaDainian Tomlinson, Michael Turner, Marion Barber, Frank Gore), it is smart to add a run-stuffing linebacker to your rotation.
