Serious Problems at Cornerback

In a day full of bad news, the Eagles announced that two cornerbacks are missing extended time. Ellis Hobbs is lost for the year with a severe neck injury while Joselio Hanson has been banned by the NFL for four games. Both have seen significant time for the defense and special teams, so their loss is a huge blow.

Hobbs has officially been placed on IR after suffering a neck injury in Sunday’s game. He needs surgery to repair his neck, and Andy Reid is optimistic that Hobbs will have a chance to return to the game. An extremely tough thing for Hobbs, who has been a big part of the secondary and a strong kick returner since joining the Eagles. Probably the worst type of injury is to the neck/spine, and there is a chance his career is over.

Also announced on Wednesday was the four-game suspension of Hanson, who tested positive for a diuretic after last year’s NFC Championship game against the Cardinals. He did not take steroids, but unfortunately took a substance that is on the banned list. Vikings defensive tackles Pat and Kevin Williams tested positive for a similar substance last year but won a federal appeal to avoid suspension.

The Eagles signed CB Ramzee Robinson, a former Lion and “Mr. Irrelevant”, who was at the NovaCare Complex earlier in the week. Also new to the 53-man roster is Jack Ikegwounu, a former fourth-round pick called up from the practice squad. Both seemed excited for the opportunity to help out this team. The losses of Hobbs and Hanson are tough to swallow, but it is time for these two youngsters to step up and contribute.
